thrush - This page talks about thrush and how to fix it.

Thrush is an anaerobic bacteria. In other words it is a bacteria that feeds off the lack of oxygen. Thrush attacks the frog of the hoof. You can identify thrush by its smell and appearance. Thrush has a foul odor that smells of rot and decay. Now the frog sheds twice a year on a horse. this shedding is not to be confused with thrush but if the frog only partial sheds it can lead up to thrush. Thrush will give the frog a "cheesy" appearance and black decay. Most of the time horses acquire thrush from mucky environment or not getting hooves picked out enough. It only takes three days to get thrush. The best way to prevent thrush is to pick out the horse feet daily. If not taken care of thrush can start to eat away at the sensitive tissues. Then you have bleeding thrush and let go long can attack your ligaments leaving the horse with no leg to stand on.

Like I said the best thing to do is just pick out your horses feet daily but if you get thrush, I fine the best thing is an old dish washing fluid bottle of dawn, sunlight, etc, emptied out and filled with 50% bleach and 50% water. If you have bleeding thrush don't use!!! If bleeding use peroxide. Bleach is for external application only. Bleach will burn in open cuts and wounds. You will have fun trying to pick your horses feet up again. Apply peroxide til wounds ,and/or cuts, are healed. Apply beach for about a week. The dryer and cleaner the horses environment the heathier the hooves.
